The Austrian off-road specialist is famous as a world-leader in two-wheeled dirt bikes but it is less well known that the firm was also a producer of ATVs and quads for a brief, two-year period between 2007 and 2009.
Following a link-up with American quad and ATV specialist Polaris in 2005, KTM launched two sport/leisure ATVs in 2007, the 450XC and 525XC using the liquid-cooled, four-stroke, single cylinder SOHC engines from its two-wheeled enduro range.
They then followed this up in 2008 with the launch of the racing-specific 450SX and 505SX, the prime difference being the SXs had a wider track to comply with racing regulations plus they used the motocross twin cam engines for more power.
Unfortunately, sales were not as great as hoped and KTM withdrew the machines, and from ATV production, in 2009.
