Genuine Ducati Parts & Spares
Ducati is one of motorcycling’s most famous brands, often called the ‘two-wheeled Ferrari’. Yet its motorcycle origins after World War II were modest, as a lightweight, utility machine manufacturer.
Ducati was founded in 1926 in Bologna, Italy by Antonio Ducati and his four sons to manufacture radio parts. After WWII, in 1950, it built its first motorcycle, the 50cc, ‘Cucciolo’.
In the late 1950s Ducati started making larger, performance machines. Engineer Fabio Taglioni introduced Desmodromic valves on the 1956 125 Grand Prix racer, a system adopted by Ducati’s road singles from 1968 which has since become a Ducati signature, along with the 90º V-twin engine layout introduced in the 1970s.
After being bought by Cagiva in 1985, Ducati developed the liquid-cooled, four-valve ‘Desmoquattro’ V-twin engine, which powered the 851 to world superbike success in 1990, leading to the 888 and 916, which won eight more WSB championships. During this period, Ducati’s Monster roadster and 900SS sports, both using air-cooled ‘desmo’ V-twins also became very successful.
Ducati was sold to Texas Pacific in 1996, re-entered the new MotoGP class in 2003 and, with an increasingly diverse range of performance V-twins including cruisers, adventure bikes and nakeds, has since gone from strength to strength.
Ducati became MotoGP champions in 2007, was bought by Audi in 2012, currently produces around 60,000 machines a year and has been voted one of the world’s best brands.
