Austrian firm KTM has grown rapidly in recent years to become one of Europe’s leading motorcycle manufacturers and is famous particularly for its off-road machines.

KTM was set up as a metal fabricating business way back in 1934 in Mattighofen by engineer Johann Trunkenpolz (KTM standing for Kraftfahrzeug Trunkenpolz Mattighofen) but only began producing motorcycles in 1951.

In 1953 Ernst Kronreif joined with the company re-registered as Kronreif and Trunkenpolz Mattighofen. Off-road motorcycle racing success began soon after although the company sadly succumbed to insolvency in 1991.

Since its relaunch in 1992, though, KTM has gone on to great success, first in motocross and enduro before expanding into rally/adventure machines (KTM won 16 consecutive Dakar Rallies from 2001 to 2017), quad bikes, road machines such as the Duke and Super Duke and, most recently, grand prix racing where it is dominant in Moto3 and has now also entered MotoGP.
