Model Description
Japan’s first venture in the large capacity adventure bike or desert rally replica category, as pioneered by BMW’s R80G/S and followed by Yamaha’s Super Tenere, Suzuki’s DR 750 and more, pretty much set the template for the breed in the late ‘80s and was a huge success – so much so that it retains a large, devoted following to this day.
Introduced in 1989 it was developed from 1988’s XRV650 (which was only sold in a few markets). Both used the reworked six-valve, liquid-cooled V-twin from the Shadow cruiser in a chassis inspired by the works NXR750 Paris-Dakar-winning desert racer. As a result it was stylish, rugged, long legged and, in 750 guise with 61bhp, punchy enough to be truly versatile. Facelifted again in 1993 it survived until 2003 and has proved hugely enduring and durable, if now outpaced by modern 1000cc+ versions.
