Only Honda comes up with bikes as thorough, brilliant and unique as the original Pan European. Launched in 1989 as a ‘clean sheet’ design to be a European-orientated tourer it used a purpose-built, longitudinally-mounted, 100bhp V4 with shaft drive which delivered incomparably linear and flexible drive mated to a chassis that handled far better than any heavyweight tourer previously had a right to and all in a comfortable, well-appointed (built-in panniers came as standard) and refined and effective package. No wonder the police and patrol services, not to mention thousands of owners, loved them so much. Not sexy, admittedly, but so capable it remains in huge demand as a used buy today.
